2024 HAYWARD LIBRARY - LUNAR NEW YEAR FESTIVAL
Hansamo’s Pungmulnori team participated in the Lunar New Year Show at the Hayward Public Library on February 3rd,2024. The library was full with people of various ages and races celebrating the Lunar New Year. Hansamo's student representatives introduced the traditional Korean instruments of Pangut such as jing(gong), kkwaenggwari(small gong),buk(barrel drum), janggu(hourglass-shaped drum), and taepyeongso(double reed wind instrument). They also taught how to say hello, and New Year's greetings in Korean. There was a lot of enthusiastic interest in Korean culture. Subsequently, the cheerful sound of kkwaenggwari, like thunder and lightning splitting the sky, marked the beginning of Pangut. Despite concerns about performing in a narrow indoor space compared to usual performance venues, the students performed calmly and confidently. As always, Hansamo and the audience became one in joy with the lively rhythm and melody. The students' relaxed but enjoyable performance was amazing. Teaching the audience how to spin the beona(spinning top disc) was one of the highlights of the performance. It was a truly rewarding occasion to be able to showcase Korea's wonderful culture at an event commemorating the Lunar New Year.
